October 2025 – Click here to read the written recap of this program.
Susan Kleiman will highlight some of the 245 species of birds that breed, winter, and stop-over at The Nature Conservancy’s Nachusa Grasslands preserve. She will discuss the way the preserve is managed to help birds through prescribed fires, grazing, tree thinning, and increasing habitat through restoration of local farm fields.
Susan will discuss some of the success stories and worries that go hand-in-hand with bird conservation. She will welcome questions at the end of her presentation.
Susan considers herself a naturalist. Since she was quite young Susan was drawn toward animals and nature. She has a bachelor’s degree in forestry and wildlife management and a master’s degree in environmental education and interpretation. Before coming to Illinois, Susan worked in 12 states participating in environmental education. Susan has been working and volunteering at Nachusa for three decades, performing many aspects of restoration, education, as well as monitoring birds and frogs.
